Serendipity

Like most things that happened to Peter Petrelli it was an accident, one that smacked of destiny

Peter had been walking quietly along a city street, attempting to avoid attention, when he collided with something or rather someone that he couldn’t see.- at least not until he was knocked on his backside.

“Bloody hell!  Not you!?!”

Peter looked up, hearing the familiar British voice and found himself facing his former mentor, Claude Rains.  Claude looked almost as scruffy as the last time Peter had seen him.  “Claude?!?” Peter said in disbelief.

“Can’t a bloke get any peace?”  Claude asked as he somewhat reluctantly helped Peter up.

“Nice to see you, too, Claude.”

“Shouldn’t see me at all, that’s the problem.  See you’ve still got that trick.”

“Not exactly.”

“Whatcha mean, ‘Not exactly?’”  Claude asked, frowning.

“I lost my powers.”

“Seem to be workin’ just fine to me.”

“My Father, he stole them.  He faked his death…” Peter began hesitantly.

“Oh that’s just fantastic, that is.”

Unsure how else to rely Peter said, “He’s really dead now, for good.”

“I’d say I was sorry, but I’d be lying.  Your dad was bloody terrifying enough and him with your abilities…”

“Yeah I know.”

“And now your brother and his ‘Homeland Security.’”

“Yeah.”

“Amazin’  that you turned out the way you did.”

Peter smiled, realizing that this was about as close to a compliment as he would get from Claude.

“Probably not too safe  to be chattin’‘ere, even given that we’re invisible.”

“Probably not.”  Peter said nodding in agreement.

Claude ran a hand through his chaotic brown hair.  Awkwardly he asked, “So when your dad kicked off…?”

“After he …died… I got a hold of this formula.”

Claude shot Peter a look.  “Oh this just gets better and better.”

“As far as I know, the rest was destroyed, but since the formula, I can only hang onto one power at a time after I make contact with a benefactor,”  Peter replied, using one of Claude’ terms.

“Accidentally doing what I can do.  Some things never change.”

“That’s pretty ironic as I’m trying to stay under the radar.  Everyone is.”

“Except I’m not runnin’ a resistance group against the establishment.”

“How did you know?”

“I know you, Peter.  You’re not the type to just lay low and let somethin’ like this just ‘appen.  Especially not with your brother being behind it.”

“I definitely want to punch him in the face these days.”

“You’re not alone in that sentiment either.”

“So, Claude, why are you here?”

“None of your business.”

Peter smiled in spite of the gruff remark.  Same old Claude.  Peter was glad to see Claude was alive and he’d be lying if he said that invisibility wasn’t a bonus with all that was going on.  While flight was great for travel and quick escapes, invisibility was better for hiding, spying, and avoiding situations where escape would be needed.  Hopefully the Hunter and his men would not be expecting this trick.

Claude moved to go.

“Take care of yourself, Claude.”

“You too, pup.”

And they left, walking in opposite directions.  Being as his back was towards him, Peter couldn’t see that Claude was smiling ever so slightly.
